Waterproofing quotes can look very different from one company to the next. These questions help you compare them on equal terms.
About the company
- What's your Minnesota license number? Look it up with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.
- Can I see proof of insurance? You want liability coverage and, if they have employees, workers' comp.
- Who will be in my house? Their own crew or subcontractors?
About the diagnosis
- Where exactly is the water coming in, and why? A good contractor can show you, not just sell a system.
- Could grading or downspouts solve part of this? An honest answer may save you money.
- Is any of this structural? Horizontal cracks and bowing walls need a different repair than leaks.
About the scope and price
- How many feet of drain tile, and on which walls?
- Which pump, and is a battery backup included?
- What happens to my finished walls and flooring? Who removes them, who puts them back, and is that in the price?
- What does the warranty cover, for how long, and does it transfer if I sell?
Get it in writing
The quote should list the work, materials, start date, payment schedule and warranty. Be cautious with large up-front deposits and with pressure to sign the same day.
Getting two or three quotes is normal. Comparing them line by line using these questions is the easiest way to see real differences.
